The Physical Characteristics of Insects

In Week 9, we’ve been learning about the body parts of insects. I know that there are four main parts of an insect. The Head, Thorax, Antenna and Abdomen.

1. Both the Cicada and Wētā share several similarities in their physical structure. They both possess antenna, thorax, legs, head, and abdomen. However, there are distinct differences between these two insects. The Cicada has wings and compound eyes, while the Wētā features an exoskeleton and spiracles.

2. I think that the way the differences affect the was the insect that lived, moved and defended themselves the Cicada had wings that let it fly to other places where it could live and the Wētā couldn’t fly which means it would take a longer time to find a place to live.

3. The insects that have similar characteristics to a Cicada may be grasshoppers anWētā mabe crickets.

4. The Cicada has got spiracles and I know that because I know that Cicada’s have 10 pairs of spiracles on their bodies.

Insect Roles in our world

In Steam, we’ve been learning about Insects and their roles in our world. The first way is that they help our world by pollinating. Moths, Ants, Wasps and Beetles are also helping to pollinate. The second way they help is by decomposing waste and organic matter. One of the hard-working decomposed is a dung beetle. Another way they help is by controlling the pest populations. Controlling pests helps keep populations in check which in turn protects gardens and farm crops. Next, they are an important food source. Did you know that beetles are the number 1 most favourite insects to eat? And finally, they are inspiring. Some insects have inspired artists.

3D Insect model

In Steam, we’ve been learning about Insect Life Cycles. We have also

been making our own 3D model of an insect we have chosen and had to

make a Life Cycle on Tinkercad. I did a Life Cycle of Seven Spotted

Ladybug. The Seven spotted Ladybug has 4 stages Egg, Larva, Pupae and

Adult.
