All Blacks Rugby
With Mrs Burdukany in STEAM, we learned about rugby and the All Blacks. We had questions to answer, and we needed to see a presentation to answer them. Here are my questions and answers:
1) When was rugby introduced to New Zealand and by who?
1A) Rugby was first introduced to New Zealand in 1870 by Charles Monro.
2) When did New Zealand play their first rugby game?
2A) The first rugby game to be played in New Zealand took place in May 1870.
3) When did New Zealand play their first international game? Did they win or lose? What was the score?
3A) In 1893, New Zealand played its first international rugby game but lost 6-8 tries.
4) When was the New Zealand team called the All Blacks? Why are they known as the All Blacks? What were they originally called?
4A) The All Blacks received their current name since their uniforms are ‘The blackest of black’. Before that, they were called ‘The New Zealand Māori’.
5) Name 3 of their best players. What are they known for?
5A) Richie McCaw, who holds the world record for test appearances.
Jonah Tali Lomu, was the top player in the 1995 rugby World Cup.
And Colin Meads, who is referred to as the greatest player to ever take the field.
6) Why do the All Blacks perform the haka before each match? What does it mean and what do they perform it for?
6A) The haka was a fighting dance and war cry for their people. The All Blacks perform it with intensity to intimidate the other team and to tell them that they are serious and bringing their all.
