With Mrs Burdukany in STEAM, we learned about rugby and the All Blacks. We had questions to answer, and we needed to see a presentation to answer them. Here are my questions and answers:
1) When was rugby introduced to New Zealand and by who?
1A) Rugby was first introduced to New Zealand in 1870 by Charles Monro.
2) When did New Zealand play their first rugby game?
2A) The first rugby game to be played in New Zealand took place in May 1870.
3) When did New Zealand play their first international game? Did they win or lose? What was the score?
3A) In 1893, New Zealand played its first international rugby game but lost 6-8 tries.
4) When was the New Zealand team called the All Blacks? Why are they known as the All Blacks? What were they originally called?
4A) The All Blacks received their current name since their uniforms are ‘The blackest of black’. Before that, they were called ‘The New Zealand Māori’.
5) Name 3 of their best players. What are they known for?
5A) Richie McCaw, who holds the world record for test appearances.
Jonah Tali Lomu, was the top player in the 1995 rugby World Cup.
And Colin Meads, who is referred to as the greatest player to ever take the field.
6) Why do the All Blacks perform the haka before each match? What does it mean and what do they perform it for?
6A) The haka was a fighting dance and war cry for their people. The All Blacks perform it with intensity to intimidate the other team and to tell them that they are serious and bringing their all.
For Whanau STEAM Term 3, Tūī Hāpori focused on famous New Zealand people. Tūī 4 did a famous New Zealand author, Lynley Dodd. She is famous for her realistic illustrations and enjoyable children’s stories about nature and animals.
Tūī 4 split into groups of 3-5, and mostly groups of 4. There was a starting group an ending group, and groups for all the characters. The characters were: Hairy Maclary, Scarface Claw, Schnitzel Von Krumm, Zachary Quack, and Slinky Malinky. Olivia Suen, Giada Mangal, Isla Swift and I were in a group together. We were the Zachary Quack group.
In my group, we first decided who would do what, and what to do for our presentation. We decided that Isla and Olivia would be the speakers, and that Giada and I would perform the actions. Our poem, along with the 7 other poems, were not handmade but generated by AI. Our teacher, Mrs Barrowman, printed the 7 out in sheets for us to practice with. Here is our poem: (continuing from another few ones)
And who’s this small friend with a splash and a quack?
It’s Zachary Quack, who never looks back.
A duckling so tiny with feathers so bright-
Splashing and dashing with all of his might!
Here are our photos that we presented at our Tūī Assembly:
Here are some things I learned during STEAM this Term:
🌟 How to work together in a team to create a presentation
🌟 How to show a presentation in front of an audience
For STEAM Term 3, Olivia, Isla, Giada and I made NZ in a Minecraft world. We each created a NZ landmark, native tree, and native animal. We worked hard in making them as realistic as possible. We hope that we captured a NZ feeling in our special world! Something that I would change if I had another chance to do this is definitely making my landmark smaller! I made: Landmark – The Beehive. Tree – Kōwhai. Animal – Fairy Penguin. Olivia made: Landmark – The Ohakune Carrot. Tree – Kāuri. Animal – Fantail. Isla made: Landmark – The Skytower. Tree – Rimū. Animal – Kiwi. Giada made: Landmark – The L&P Bottle. Tree – Tawa. Animal – Tūī. Here are some photos of our world:
Here are my answers from the questions from the slide.
What NZ identity features did we include? The Beehive, Kōwhai tree, Fairy Penguin, The Ohakune Carrot, Kāuri tree, Fantail, The Skytower, Rimū tree, Kiwi, The L&P Bottle, Tawa tree, Tūī.
What did I learn about Aotearoa during this project? I learned that NZ is special and has many different native trees.
What digital skills did I use? I used Minecraft, so I used digital building skills.
What would I do differently next time? Something that I would change if I had another chance to do this is definitely making my landmark smaller!
How well did we work together? We worked together really well, though sometimes the others were a little annoying.
During the school holidays, I went to the Circus! It was amazing. There were so many different acts. My favourite one was probably the act called ‘The Human Cannonball’! It was when a man got shot out of a cannon from one side of the tent to the other(and it was a really big tent)! But there were many other acts as well, including an act with gigantic bubbles! My whole family(Mum, Dad, Brother, Sister)went there, and we all enjoyed it. There were food carts outside the circus tent so you could buy food to eat during the show(including candy floss!), but my family didn’t get any. That didn’t matter, though, because we were too distracted by all the different acts to care about food. Although it cost a lot, going to the Circus was definitely worth the money!
What was in Eunice’s World: Eunice’s world was a Kaitiakitanga Game. There were questions and aquariums, and even a gift shop! I really enjoyed it.
What I learned from Eunice’s World:
1. Not to stomp on turtle eggs.
2. To ride on electric trains instead of fossil-fuelled ones.
3. Not to overfish.
My favourite thing in Eunice’s World: My favourite thing was definitely the gift shop. There were so many cool gifts! I really wanted to get something from it, but we had to leave them alone for other people. There were cool shells, amazing gemstones, and more! There was even a cake!
Eunice’s Rating:
Out of ten, I give Eunice:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I gave Eunice 9 stars because her world was awesome, but I wasn’t allowed to take things and eat the cake.
This is a photo of my Amazing Underwater Experience. It shows people the beauty of the Sea, therefore encouraging them to stop littering in the Ocean and start protecting marine life. I am proud of it because it is really beautiful. This is a photo of my bee enclosure. It shows how bees pollinate flowers and help them to grow and reproduce. It makes me proud because it was hard to make. This is a photo of my turtle enclosure. There are a mother and a father turtle there. There are also some turtle eggs, that will soon hatch into a baby turtle. It shows the turtle life cycle. It makes me proud because I really like turtles.
The first step to make a Concrete Poem is to draw an outline of the topic you have chosen(best to draw in pencil). Next you write in the shape your poem. It does not have to rhyme, but it can. (Optional: erase the outline of your topic.) Here is my example:
It was easy to make the bee enclosure. All I had to do was make a tree and grow some flowers on the ground.
It was hard to make the Cherry Blossom forest since I had to grow the trees, and it took SO LONG. In the end I had to increase the random tick speed to 100, and that worked really well.
My next step is to make a Kaitiakitanga Questionnaire to teach people to be a Kaitiaki.
Things that have been hard: It was hard finding animals that are in New Zealand, and I had to change a few enclosures. The hardest enclosure to make was probably the tropical fish aquarium since I had to cover the whole ground with sand, and that was annoying.
Things that have been easy: It was really easy to make the Zoo ‘building’, because all I had to do for it was make a roof and some glass walls for the enclosures. The easiest enclosure to build was definitely the frog enclosure since all I had to do was dig a small hole, pour water in it, put some lily pads on top, and add some mangrove roots.
My next steps: I’m going to make a Cherry Blossom Forest and add bees in it to make honey so people can get some free honey.
