Athletics as a Teacher

It was the day! I woke up feeling like a bubble about to burst, I rose up early because why would you want to be late. Some time was spent picking out my favourite yellow sports clothes, and getting dressed into my normal outfit. I took my car to work and talked to my fellow teachers. Athletics day! The best day of the year, my only chance to run around and have fun as a teacher.

We had arrived. The venue was just perfect, it had a ton of seats, and a massive field, with a running track all around it! Once everyone was there, Mrs Tala’imanu started with a big cheer from every house, Kowhai was obviously the loudest.

I spent most of my time at shotput, with the year 4’s, then 5’s, and then 6’s, it was my first time judging shotput, but the manakau county sports teacher helped me. I was awfully surprised to see how many children, especially the younger ones, didn’t know how to throw a shotput ball.

The best part of the day finally came around, the relays! Before I could go on, I watched some of my students do their relay. Rimu won, but it should have been Kowhai! My time came, to show everyone my outstanding relay skills. We had to do a warm up first. I did my favourite warmup, the almost split, where you almost do a split, me and my other teammates had a laugh and a chat.

My position was set, I was waiting for the relay to start, my role was the second runner. BANG, the race had started, my teammate started towards me. They arrived and I shoved the relay batton into my hand. I started bolting towards my teammate Cassidy, and I threw the batton at him! He started sprinting towards the next teammate, Mr vT. The batton arrived at Mr vT and he knew his job. This was the final lap and we were ahead by what felt like miles! There was no way we weren’t going to win this.

I froze, we made it! We won! I started walking to my team and we all celebrated, I knew we could do it. After everyone calmed down a bit, we had the prizegiving. Most of the top students were in Kowhai! Here we go, the top house, what’s it going to be? Mrs Cosford was using the suspension to her advantage! We were on the edge of our seats, KOWHAI! No way, we won, Kowhai is still the best! (big shocker).

  1. Very good one. I am impressed with how much you noticed what the teachers were doing yesterday. Great observations, Chelsea!
