My first few days in Kahu 2024
This is my second week in Kahu as a year 8. I have been doing rotations to learn what this year is going to be like, learning various things, like : NRich, Blogs, NZCM, and a few other new things this year. We also have started our first art project of the year, the Chinese New Year lanterns. I worked with a peer to create a lantern for out upcoming celebration. We made slides to show our work.
We spent most of the first day naming our stationary, setting ourselves up, and getting to know our class. This year I am in Kahu 2, I have been enjoying the year so far, my Teacher is Miss Smith. I am starting to apply for my jobs and doing the forms for tech. We also completed a writing asttle, and we have been spending some blocks in week 2 marking the different things from the test.
My version of the Matariki Legend
Tāwhiriātea was one of many brothers, he had 70 including himself. As they had all grown grew up, he didn’t see them as much. Tāwhirimātea’s parents, his mother Papatūānuku, who was the god of earth, and his father Ranginui, the god of sky, had been fighting, it wasn’t a very serious disagreement, and but they couldn’t seem to make a collective decision. They could either separate and light up the sky, making peace for all below, or stay together, and fight for love. They would eventually sort everything out, but this feud made Tāwhirimātea very angry. Being the god of weather, Tāwhiri was not liked among the others, he often was in a bad mood and would create crazy weather. It was hard for him to find love. This made him easily jealous of any relationships surrounding him, especially his parents, as they were so deeply in love. Tāwhiri found it crazy that the only thing they could fight over was how close they were.
Ranginui and Papatūānuku had come past the argument, and had been telling their son Tāwhirimātea about how it had made their love stronger. At this point, Tāwhiri was enraged, he was so jealous of his parents. He couldnt couldn’t bear to be near them. Tāwhiri needed some time to himself, so he ran away from his parents, and kept running, past all the other gods. Tāwhiri went down to earth. He wandered in a forest, it was cloudy, but still bright. He could hear the Piwakawaka happily singing, and he could feel the rustling of the trees around him. Tāwhiri sat down, and started to think, then he started to cry. Tāwhiri’s brain swirled with rage.
A few days passed, and he had returned from earth. Tāwhiri had made a promise to himself, he promised that he would do everything in his power to separate his parents. Tāwhirimātea was ready, he had finally had enough of his parents. Being the god of weather, he was able to swirl up a massive storm. The most Horrible bright lightning, the loudest thunder that was worse than nuclear explosions, and the heaviest rain, falling down at such a pace that you couldn’t see through it! Finally, he laid down on the forest floor, dug his feet as hard as he could into the ground, and used it to force them apart. Tāwhiri was laughing hysterically, finally he had broken the strong love between his parents.
Ranginui and Papatūānuku had been separated, they were both devastated. Tāwhiri just pretended they never existed and went on with his life, but Rangi and Papa were constantly crying. Floods tore across earth and mountains crumbled, the world was so affected by their separation and they didn’t even know. They cried and cried. One day, after many months of sadness, their tears touched in the galaxies, they met together and created a gorgeous artwork. The artwork that we now call Matariki.
Papatūānuku and Ranginui had remained separated, but Matariki stayed in the sky as a symbolism of their love. It appears in the night sky every year around the time that Rangi and Papa were torn apart. Some people say that if you stay up late at the time of Matariki, and look up to the night sky, it feels as if Papa and Rangi are right there, watching over you and smiling down. Sharing that moment together even though they are forever apart.
Beloved Sweater For sale.
Outgrown Sweater for Sale.
Selling an old sweater of mine that I have outgrown, very loved but unfortunately there is no way of fitting into it anymore. Size 10 kids.
Selling my old sweater, very loved but has been outgrown and im wanting to sell it. The materials aren’t the highest quality, it is woollen, and it was handmade by my mother a few years ago. It’s soft and quite comfortable.
It is pink with orange swirls and although it’s not the prettiest looking, it doesn’t stain, it goes with everything, and it’s great for day trips. The colours aren’t super bright, but they don’t clash and they look nice.
I am very sad to be selling this jumper, as I have had it for a long time, and I love it dearly, but it has always been on the smaller side, and I cannot fit into it at all now. Would probably better suit a 7-9 year old so they have room to grow into it.
Please email for further information, happy to ship but willing to do pickups or drop offs.
Miss Rowlands day in a cyclone (Diary Entry)
9:37am,
I woke up to the sound of violent wind and rain, I got out of bed and walked into my living room, I opened my curtains and looked out the window, it was raining and all the trees were blowing like crazy. I made myself coffee, and then sat down and drank it.
10:07am,
I finished my coffee and walked to my room. I didn’t even need to put on clothes today, so I wore the comfiest thing I could find. I opened my phone and checked my teacher whatsapp group, turns out everyone was also having a lazy day. Sitting down on my couch, I opened my computer and started organising work for when we would go back to school.
3:20pm,
I spent most of my afternoon emailing and organising work and plans. A massive headache started to form inside my brain, so I decided to take a break, and I used this time to make myself my 3rd coffee.
4:53pm,
I watched my favourite show on my TV, and drank my coffee. The rain and wind is making me really cold, so I decided to take a nice, warm, shower. It was so nice I almost fell asleep!
5:34pm,
I changed into pyjamas and decided to start making my dinner. I was really tired after my shower so I didn’t want to make a large dinner. I walked into the kitchen, suddenly, in the corner of my eye, I spotted a bird! My face changed into a look of disgust and I immediately looked away.
6:19pm,
When my dinner was finished, I pulled some leftover cheesecake from the fridge and ate a slice for dinner. Whilst eating I did more work on my laptop.
9:00pm,
I made myself another coffee, and I had a zoom with some of my teacher friends, and we talked about going back to school. I started to get tired but I was almost finished with my work and I wanted to complete it before the next day.
12:44am,
I finally managed to finish the work, at this point I was in bed and half asleep on my computer. I shut the lid and slowly closed my eyes.
4:27am,
I woke up to the sound of heavy rain, so I checked my phone and it was 4:27am! I decided to make myself a coffee, since I could already tell that I would have trouble falling back asleep.
5:50am,
I finally managed to fall asleep. I can’t really remember what I dreamt about, but I believe it had something to do with me being a baby crawling up the stairs.. I don’t really know. I have a feeling that i’m going to wake up very late tomorrow.
Blake Expedition For The Environment
On Thursday two girls from the Blake trust fund came, we did VR and learnt about the waterways. We had to see dirty and clean waters then compare them, and talk about the difference. We did some other things as well.
My group was the first group to go down to the VR, they gave us an introduction. There were two girls, Alice and Grace. They told us what was going to happen, and they talked about the Blake foundation
We put the VR headsets on, and we got to look at a few places, then we took them off again. Once we took them off we talked about what waters looked healthy and what didn’t. We put the headsets back on, and we got to fly above the White Island volcano, it was really cool. After that we got to see some seagulls and they were right in front of us!
We looked at more waters, one was really clean, and the other was very gross. We took off the headsets again and then we had to discuss with a buddy about how we can help stop overfishing, and pollution. I was buddies with Rosery and we talked about it, and had some good ideas.
We all discussed how we can help stop overfishing and pollution as a group, then we got to see some extra clips. We saw so many animals, lots of fish, whales, sea lions, eels, seagulls, and stingrays.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this experience and I am very grateful, it was a cool experience and it really helped make learning fun, while still teaching us about the environment.
The Cuppy…
You’re alone in a forest nearby your house, your notice is the sun going down and you decide it’s probably a good idea to head back soon. You decide to stop and admire the way that the trees sway in the wind, when suddenly you hear an odd “ocu ocu” noise, much like an Owl. You assume it’s an owl and realise now would be the perfect time to go home. Your eyes widen, there is a legend about a monster in this very woods, a monster with big red eyes, and claws bigger than butcher knives! And this monster is known for trapping its victims, making them think it’s an owl..
You decide to stop panicking, seeing as it’s probably just an Owl, and that’s just a silly legend. You hear this loud noise, like something galloping towards you, not a horse though, a Cuppy! You can hear it behind you, trying to keep your breath, you close your eyes and pray it’s just a dream. Suddenly the noise stopped, and finally you were at peace. You open your eyes, hoping it was your imagination and suddenly you hear a loud breathing noise, oh no, it’s right behind you.
You squeeze your eyes shut and tense your whole body, this is it, the end. You decide to turn, and finally look at this “Cuppy”. Slowly your body shifts to the other direction, and the first thing you see is its massive red eyes staring at you. You hold back a scream as you take a second to process what’s happening, this massive monster, right in your face! It bows slowly, like it’s about to pounce “oh no” you speak, trembling with fear.
You think about trying to outrun it, but you can tell it’s much faster than you. Suddenly it grabs you and squeezes you tightly, getting ready to rip through you with its massive claws, you brace yourself and close your eyes. Suddenly it feels like something has changed, you open your eyes, something feels very different, the Cuppy’s mood has changed, its eyes have softened, and so has its grip. You stay still, and make sure you don’t make any sudden movements.
It slowly lowers its head to you and sniffs you loudly, you’re unaware of what’s happening so you just stay still and watch. Suddenly it puts you down. You are very surprised, but instead of running away, you stand your ground. The Cuppy looks at you with a confused face. You slowly approach the Cuppy, showing you aren’t trying to harm it. You are risking your life but kind of enjoying it. Instead of attacking, the Cuppy inches closer to you. You pat the Cuppy, and enjoy feeling its soft fluffy fur, until you find a big matted area.
The Cuppy does this odd signal, and picks you up again, you wonder if it’s actually going to kill you this time. But it puts you on its back. You were very confused, but you grabbed a bit of its fur so you wouldn’t fall off. It takes you to a little circle surrounded by trees, full of scraps and other finds, you assume it’s the monster’s home. It’s almost midnight so you decided to get some rest, hoping you would be able to get home in the morning.
You wake up to a weird scraping sound, you look around and see it’s still night time. You suddenly look at the Cuppy, and realise the origin of the scraping sound, the Cuppy is sharpening its claws. Wait what? The Cuppy turns towards me and notices I’m awake. It suddenly pounces on top of me and wraps its claws around my neck, I stare at it in fear, and watch as it grips me tighter. The Cuppy removes one of its hands from my neck and before I could think, the Cuppy slices its claws into my stomach and rips my stomach open.
I slowly start losing consciousness as the pain shoots through my bod. I looked at my stomach and the massive gorges through my torso, I sat in a pool of my own blood and panicked, unsure of what to do, am I going to die? These massive wounds were definitely unsurvivable. I closed my eyes, waiting there, for the pain to stop, and the world to slowly fade away.
Science Expo as a Rat
As I hobble into this wretched building, I can see these gigantic pieces of work from the big school children, all a very different style than each other. It’s called a “Science Expo”, where the kids show their science work they have been doing.
All I can do is squeak and crawl around. I don’t know a lot about science, but I do know that humans are much better at it than me. They can make these massive things that show what they learnt, I have no idea how!
Science is that thing that you do, its chemicals sometimes, or other things (I don’t know, I’m a rat). I looked around a lot, there was a big variety of things there, so many things, like one about Greece, and one about how oil and water don’t mix! I may be a rat, but I sure do like learning about science.
There were a lot of different set ups, but my favourite had to be the volcanos! They were massive, and they looked cool! Some of the volcanoes were snowy, and some were very grassy, and they were all laid out on a mat which showed where they would actually be outside!
I heard there was going to be a volcano eruption at 3, so I decided to go and find a hiding spot, so I could watch. They were setting up for the eruption, so I got into my hiding spot and prepared myself. 10 minutes later, they were staring. All of a sudden I heard “3, 2, 1” and a massive BOOM sounded, and all at the same time, all of the volcanoes went off! It was amazing.
I can smell a yummy smell, like apricot.. or something. I found the source of the smell! Someone left a jar of marmalade open, so I am going to eat it. Ohhhh my gosh, my tummy hurts sooo much. I may have eaten too much marmalade. Someone came and shooed me out, because they saw me, but I saw a tall lady getting into her car, so I snuck in and hid in her car.
The lady arrived at what I am guessing was her house, I quietly followed her inside and the smell was amazing! Like someone was cooking me a buffet! Mmmm mmmm. Oops, the lady saw me.. she screamed super loud and her husband was trying to catch me! Some big, tall kids were there, and they were screaming almost as loud as their mother!
I am on the road, alone. I should have not eaten that marmalade, or I should have hidden myself better when I snuck into that tall lady’s house! I guess I’m a street rat now. I wish that I was back at that school, watching the science expo!
Lazy Moo
I live on a farm, where kids come and learn things. I’m not a human though, I am a cow. Moo moo or whatever, we have some kids coming today to see us, they are so boring! I stared with a close eye as the bus of kids arrived, luckily none of them seemed to notice me. The kids did lots of activities before they came to see us, there were four groups of kids.
The children are here. I am still sleeping, lying down in my favourite spot, right in the mud! They think that I am lazy and cute, but really I am just tired. The first group of kids came over, some of them tried to pat me, but I was busy sleeping. My friends really like it when people come and pat them, I don’t know why though.
The second group came, then the third. They kept trying to feed me grass and pet me, but I found it funny because they were just out of reach. A few kids called me lazy but I don’t mind because they are right, I love sleeping! I watched as the kids left to pet the other farm friends. I really don’t see the fun in walking up to them and getting pats and eating grass, we have people who take care of us and do that anyways!
The last group of kids for the day, finally! It’s super annoying being the first paddock that the kids come to, it’s like I don’t even get a warning! Some small girl said my name was ‘Ed Shearing” which is stupid! I don’t get shorn, the sheep do. I actually just realised it’s Ed Sheeran, not Ed Shearing, oops. I think Ed Sheeran is some ginger guy, wait is it because I’m ginger? Not funny. The girl said I am lazy and ginger, so mean!
I rate these kids a 4/10, I have seen worse but that Ed Sheeran kid ruined it! Other than the kids, I love my farm, I have amazing friends and cool people looking after me. The farm is a pleasant place to be.
Poem:
Lazy moo the big cow
He is mottled brown,
Because he sleeps in mud all day
While his friends just play and play!
I am tired, my friends are wild
They are crazy
More than you maybe.
Children are annoying
But they sometimes have me snoring
All they do it pat and feed
I would rather eat a weed.
Hungry Wolf
We have all heard of The Little Red Riding Hood, right? Well, did you ever wonder how the wolf felt? And what would have happened if everyone thought about the wolf’s feelings? I am the wolf, and this is my story.
I lost count of the days since I last tasted food. All I can do is think about my life before, when the forest was full of joy and yummy food. I sat in the forest weeping. One day out of the corner of my eye, I saw a young girl with a big red cape. I thought maybe, just maybe, she could give me food. I approached the little girl.
“Oh young girl, I am so hungry. I see you have a basket of delicious food, may I take it please?” The little girl looked confused and scared. “Um okay, you look really hungry, would you like to come and have tea with me and my grandma” I love little girls, they will always understand my pain. I am starving and hungry and all she can think about is caring for me.
We went to the little girl’s grandma’s house, she thought I was going to eat her. I didn’t, I did eat almost all the food though. Little girl said I can come and eat tea at her house whenever I like, she also helped me find berries I can eat. It will take some adjusting, because I am a meat eater. I am very grateful for the little girl.
Little girl and I love playing, she says even though I am a wolf, I am very fun to play with. Our favourite game is hide and seek. Little girl is my best friend, she was so kind to me when I needed it most. It is always nice to care for others, even if it means sharing with them.
