Where was Kate Sheppard born
Born in Liverpool in 1847, Kate Malcolm migrated to Christchurch in her early twenties and in 1871 married merchant Walter Sheppard. In 1885 she joined the new Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), which advocated women’s suffrage as a means to fight for liquor prohibition.

When was her death
Sheppard outlived two husbands, her only son, and her only grandchild. She died on 13 July 1934, a year after the first woman MP, Labour’s Elizabeth McCombs, entered Parliament.
Lovell-Smith died only four years later, and Sheppard herself died in Christchurch on 13 July 1934 at the age of 86.

Kate died at her home in Riccarton on 13 July 1934. She is buried at Addington cemetery with her mother, a brother and a sister. The Christchurch Times reported her death in simple appreciation: A great woman has gone, whose name will remain an inspiration to the daughters of New Zealand while our history endures.
