Guardians of the Earth

Guardians of The Earth

Killing our trees, killing our plants,

Pollution is killing like a Lion.

Shut down the factories, make it stop,

End this disaster, make it stop.

Spreading smoke, into the air,

Affecting our lungs is the smoke.

Rubbish here, Rubbish there,

Litter is being found everywhere.

In the rivers, in the sea,

Killing our beloved marine life as if it was just a stuffed animal.

Litter in the ocean, strangling turtles.

Our local Taiao

What is one thing everybody loves about The Gardens? If you guessed Tōtara Park or Botanic Gardens, Good job. As I live in The Gardens, in my perspective both Tōtara Park and Botanic Gardens are extraordinary places, but everything has differences and similarities. So I will be talking about the similarities and differences of Tōtara Park and Botanic Gardens. Although one connection of these places is, Can you guess what it is? If you guessed that they are both connected to Kaitiakitanga. Great Job. Now let’s get into it!

Tōtara Park is a really nice place to go on a stroll or for a run, but it has some downsides. Such as it’s really muddy and sometimes smelly due to the Puhinui stream. It’s more of a forest than a park as there are lots of trees in one area. There are also two playgrounds. One with a zipline and a big slide and the other with rock climbing. There is lot’s of benches to sit on but less water of the Puhinui stream.

Botanic Gardens is also a really nice place with lots of flowers and gardens. There is also a Potter Children’s Garden which is really fun to be in. It has this enormous egg with a crack which you can sit in. There is also a bird statue where you can put berries in the bird’s mouth and it will poop it out green. It’s actually pretty cool if you ask me, as I used to go there a lot as a child when I was around 3 or 4 years old and there is lot’s of picnic areas, how do I know? When I was a child I used to go to Botanic Gardens during the school holidays with friends and family. As you may know Botanic Gardens and Tōtara Park are both connected to Kaitiakitanga as Kaitiakitanga means Guardians of Nature and Botanic Gardens and Tōtara Park are both connected to nature so therefore they both are connected to Kaitiakitanga.

Polyfest

It was a sunny, breezy day but guess what. Even better it was Polyfest. You may ask what is Polyfest? Well let’s find out. Polyfest is an annual festival of secondary schools showcasing arts and culture celebrating the Polynesian culture and many other cultures held at Manukau Sports Bowl, Auckland, New Zealand. There’s lots of deep history on Polyfest but it started in 1976. So let’s go back in time. It started off in 1976, when Ōtara was described as an unsafe and unhealthy place where only a few opportunities were provided for the residents there. So two year 12 students from Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate, Boaz Raela and Michael Rollo challenged three other schools from Auckland to a performance competition. That year the first ever Polyfest was showcased between Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate, Aorere College, Seddon College, and Māngere College to a performance competition to provide opportunities and showcase culture.

Polyfest is a place where students traditionally compete on six stages, performing traditional performances from cultures such as Cook Islands, Māori, Niuean, Samoan, Tongan and a Diversity stage where performances from cultural groups such as Indian, Fijian, Tokelau, Chinese, Korean and etc. Polyfest is a hands down fun and spectacular place to go to so please considering coming next year.

Ahoy Mateys!

Ahoy Mateys!

By Gurpreet Gill

Once upon a time there was animals cruising on a pirate
ship,

They were on route to Buckingham Palace to steal gold and the Queen’s crown.

They were hit by drip and started to trip,

They came across a town and saw a frown .

The man was as sad as people are at a funeral .

The animals had finally arrived at Buckingham Palace after a decade of series of events,

They saw a crown that they could use to make a frown.

They got by hit by a pole which gave them some dents,

Captain lion said ‘Matey’s Barge in’ as the animals barged in they kicked a clown.

POW! POW! The animal pirates were being shot at so they turned around,

They ran as fast as a cheetah and hopped back on their ship and just then Captain Lion got shot!

But the queen’s soldiers did not give up they shot a 100 million bullets a second and everyone got a wound!

Just then boat started to sink, in seconds it was halfway in the water which lead to the animals being caught.

The End
