Athletics Day
As I walked down to the start line, my breathing got heavier and the voices got louder. I couldn’t hear my friends because of the noisy cheering but I’d rather not hear what they had to say because I wanted to focus on the races going on. As I lined up for my 400 metre race my teacher called aloud “Alright, is this the year six girls?” , “Yes” we all replied back. The horror on some people’s faces was hilarious. Some moments later it was our turn. I hate running so it was kind of clear that I was going to vomit at some point (Not quite literally). I ran my hardest; however I still came 5th.
30 minutes after my first race, my second one came dashing in. My stomach was spinning like waves crashing on rocks. “Ha Lan! Come, it’s time for our 100 metre race.” my friend called out. We ran to the starting line and waited. I couldn’t stop thinking about coming last place. “On your marks, get set, go!” someone called out. I got 3rd and running made my stomach swirl like crazy.
15 minutes later while I was drinking water I heard that the 200 metre race was starting in 5 minutes. My stomach hated me, it swirled and was having its own little party. I was nervous and had no idea what to do because the thought of running makes me sick. “Goodluck Ha Lan, I’ll be cheering for you” I heard my friend say while walking to the starting line for the 3rd time. It was nerve racking… I wanted to vomit out my food and water but I held it and there goes my race. “You did amazing!” my friend called out. I came 4th, that wasn’t amazing.
I went to watch some races after having a good long rest and a lot of water. Suddenly, my 100 metres final race came bulging in like a tornado. This was the 4th time I’ve had to run across the enormous field to the starting line, it got so tiring. “Looks like it’s going to be Kowhai and Kauri! (Yellow and Green )” my teacher said on the microphone. I was running as fast as I could to the finish line but I still couldn’t come top 4.
Athletics day was fun, I mostly enjoyed watching the races rather than running in the races. I didn’t really have a lot of time to drink my water but I had enough to not come last. I enjoyed my time there and although it was confusing, it was a really exciting day.
