This week in STEAM we have been learning and researching about the All Blacks. Before you see any more rugby matches you have to read this to know everything about rugby. Here are the questions and answers.

1) When was rugby introduced to New Zealand and by who?

A. Rugby was introduced to New Zealand in 1870 by Charles Monro.

2) When did New Zealand play their first rugby game?

A. They played their first game on May 14, 1870.

3) When did New Zealand play their first international game? Did they win or lose? What was the score?

A. New Zealand played the first international game of rugby on August 15, 1903, they sadly lost, and the final score was 6-8

4) When was the New Zealand team called the All Blacks? Why are they known as the All Blacks? What were they originally called?

A. The All Blacks were named All Blacks in 1905/06 tour of Britain, and they are known as All Blacks because their uniform was the blackest of blacks, they were originally called Colonials.

5) Name 3 of their best players. What are they known for?

Richie MaCawholds the record for test appearances, Jonah Tali was the top player in the 1995 rugby World Cup. Colin Meads was so dedicated to rugby he played with a broken arm.

6) Why do the All Blacks perform the haka before each match? What does it mean and what do they perform it for?

A. The all Blacks perform the haka to express their Māōri culture. The haka means pride, streng and unity to their Māōri tribe.
