On Monday it was the start of Te wiki o Te Maori and we started to prepare for the exciting week ahead of us. I went to the Assembly and the principal told us about the new things we were going to do this week. First we tried to find the daily Patai [ question ] and we also started worksheets about different Maori things e.g how to prepare a Hangi.
We still did some work and some other activities but I would say the highlight is the daily Patai because you can get very interesting and cool Patai. We do Kapa Haka and other waiata but the main part is only five minutes long. It is the Te Manurewa waiata where the whole school sings and dances then we clap and cheer.
Outside of school, there are other nice things to hear. TVNZ is speaking more Maori than ever before and the radio is full on about this cool week to speak as much Maori as possible. About 20 percent of the time they speak Maori instead of english.
Also we sometimes play games from the Maori past and add present rules to these really fun games. Then we learnt about Maori legends, for example Maui and the Sun, Maui and the fish, then Maui and the magic jawbone, but there are some not just about Maui e.g Tamapahore and Tamapahure.
