Celebrating writers competition.

Dear President,

Did you know that our ecosystems are in lots of trouble? Why you may ask, here’s why. All the Pollution in our world is going towards the water and the oceans. Why is that bad? Well if you’re concerned, have a look at the Puhinui stream. It was once a beautiful stream running through the Tōtara park. Now, because of pollution and climate change it’s a whole different stream.

This is why I am writing this letter to your president. I ask you to help us with the Puhinui stream and encourage others to help as well. We need to stop pollution, president. You have enough rights to make a nationwide message and tell everyone to stop littering. So many people like me are concerned about what will happen in the future if this is what keeps happening.

As you know, there is no planet B. Just imagine if you gave everyone a place to live and they were still treating you badly. This is hurting our planet and we need to make a move. We have to become the kaitiakitanga of our planet and we need to save it.

We need to spread the word and save the planet, especially the Puhinui stream, let’s spread the word president, and the sea animals. They also need help. So let’s spread the word and save many sea animals. It’s on you president, and if you try to refuse, just remember that there’s no planet B.

You’re sincerely,

Manveer.

Superman’s Weakness… KRYPTONITE!

“Krypton is the element we need to collect Suntanore”. “Now about this element… The dangerous element Krypton. It’s a really dangerous element and it can kill many people, it is also a noble gas in the periodic table”. The atomic number is 36 and the atomic mass is 83.798 U. Its boiling point is – 153.4 degrees Celsius. There wouldn’t be much difference if this element didn’t exist. Krypton is commercially used as a filling gas for energy-saving fluorescent light. Krypton is a noble gas but it reacts to alkaline. Krypton is also the weakness of Superman “(cough cough) DC fans” that’s the only way we can destroy him”. Krypton isn’t a good element because it causes dizziness, nausea, vomiting, feinting and maybe even death”. “Ok boss, after I obtain this, I will take down Superman, Then we will steal…. THE MOOOOOOON!

The Kāhu Haporis trip to the Botanic Gardens and Totara Park.

The Kāhu Hapori went to totara park and botanic gardens on 6th August and 30th July. We went to see what they looked like as we will need this for our new semester topic, Kaitiakitanga or you can call it, The Guardians Of The GalaxSEA. There were a lot of similarities and differences. I’ll go through the main ones. One difference is that totara park is more of like a grassy area whereas the botanic gardens has its own footpath. Botanic gardens also have many more varieties of plants whereas totara park just has New Zealand varieties of plants. There were a lot of unique plants in botanic gardens. We had a ton of learning opportunities on the trip. There’s also a cool cafe and there is also a food truck in the area. Botanic gardens also don’t have cows as totara park has cows. I am really excited to get into our semester topic. I’m looking forward to this because in totara park there were cool things and cool plants there. We were split into groups and we had a scavenger hunt and a storm water walk. My personal favourite was the storm water walk. I really enjoyed walking around with my friends talking about the stormwater system. The fountain outside the visitors area is also really cool. This Guardians Of the GalaxSEA topic is going to be super cool and I am really looking forward to it.

Polyfest 2024!

We went on a trip to Polyfest on Wednesday 20th March in week 8. There were 14 groups and we all went in a bus. Well except me and 2 others. We went with Miss Watson in the car. First when we arrived at polyfest our bags were checked to see if we didn’t have any open water bottles. Then we were at the first stage but it was all information and there were cops and firefighters there. The second stage we went to was the diversity stage. At that stage there were different cultures and different people performing. It was really fun; we also had a tour around polyfest and we also got to refill our water bottles. After refilling our water bottles we went to the diversity stage and watched many performances. We watched a few Indian/Punjabi/Philippine/Chinese and many other cultural dances. One of my favourite performances was the Chinese one. It was like this because they had really cool costumes and it was a dance with ribbons. I really enjoyed it because the song was really smooth as well and overall it was a smooth performance. There were also many speeches by the leaders of the teams and they all said it was a cool opportunity to perform at 2024 Polyfest. They also said that since Polyfest didn’t occur from 2019 to last year they truly thought it would be a good opportunity. After all of that we went to the stage where they were all doing Kapa Haka. That was a really fun experience and it lasted really long. After all of that we went back and we were on the way to our buses. First we ran to the wrong bus and then we ran to the other bus. After that we all arrived at school and after a long fun day we played some house games outside. And that was our day at Polyfest!

The Beautiful night sky!

Breaking news! The dark sky stars are shining like never before! You can see all the shooting stars and all the true colours of the stars. It’s beautiful! The night sky today will be remembered as a special day in the South Auckland city. This event is really rare in South Auckland as the light pollution is really disturbing and you can’t stargaze that well nowadays. What I mean by that is not only light pollution. Cars, lights and everything can stop you from having a nice star gaze. There is a wonderful 4000 Square metre stargazing landmark in the south island. There, every type of pollution is banned. No lights and you can only come to the landmark in a certain period of time. Meaning that if you bring a car too late, they won’t let you enter the landmark. I enjoy star gazing and I wish that there would be more landmarks like this. Another absurd fact about the world is that there are only 13 of these no-light landmarks around the world and one of them is in my home country, New Zealand.

My Digital Art!

For our special block this week, we did digital art. This digital art was all about myself. The task assigned to me was to make a face silhouette and add everything that I like in. My digital art was a big success. I added all the things I think of and I put them all in. Well I did put all of them in at once but then, tragedy struck! All of my work got deleted so I had to restart. I lost so much progress in the old one, everything was so tiny and the whole head was full! But I got onto making a new one instantly. I completed it so fast. I did half of it that day and then the next day I finished it. There’s a photo in this blog showing my digital art. I really like my art and I’m impressed. But I really miss my old one; It was truly a shame that I couldn’t upload that, that one had over 50 pictures! Although all of that happened physically, in my mind I learnt many skills. I learnt how to effectively use the keynote app and I also had a lot of fun.

My first few days in Kāhu 2024!

Kāhu 2024 has been so good so far. All of the job opportunities for jobs has been so fun. Although there was one downfall. That downfall are clubs being canceled, although the replacement has covered for it and that replacement is fun! Its like tech last year and its really fun. We’ve also made lanterns and thats been a fun experience as well. Two teachers have changed spaces this year and two have replaced them. Miss Bearda is gone to Tuis and Mrs Van tonder replaced her. Another replacement is Miss Wang, She left to another school I think and Miss Smith replaced her. Im really looking forward to camp and all the sports opportunities coming up. Im excited for the fields construction being done so we can play football. We have also done softball trials so far and swimming trials but I didn’t do swimming. Im also excited for the leavers Jerseys in term 1, 2 or 3. Being a year 8 is really fun because of all the fun things you get to do. This year is going to be on of the best years I will have in The Gardens School. Im also excited to spend the year with my friends and class mates. Now Pe will also not be every week as there will be rotations. We will do Pe next week or the week after as not all of the classes do Pe every week. Im also hoping to get Self Directed Learner this year for all of the advantages they get. There is also a new SDL task called Takaro, I think. Its a really fun game that you can play with some of your friends for SDL points. It is a Te Reo Māori task and it falls under the Te Reo Māori section. This years SDL plan looks like its going to be really fun and cool. I like how they have added more tasks onto the SDL plan and I like how the task are actually fun. Im also kind off excited for being a house captain if I get it of course. I am really hoping to get it as I do want a leader ship role in our school. One of my helping classmates so far has been Laiko who is in my class. I help him more but he also helps me when i’m stuck on a questions. This year is going to be a roller coaster, literally! Thats because we will have Rainbows End at the end of this year if we do our jobs properly. The jobs I have applied for is Road Patrol and PE Shed Monitor. I got the Road Patrol job and there announcing the jobs soon so ill know if I am a Pe shed monitor. I am hoping we will get new football goals at the end of the fields construction. Thats the start of the year and thats what we have done so far in this year. Im really looking forward for the future activities and fun we will have this year.

How to play football!

So you wake up on a sunny day and you think you’re so lazy, so you take up a sport! You might be wondering “how about I play football”? Actually yeah! I want to play football! A football team has 11 players on a field at once, you can use your head, shoulders and any other body parts. The main one people use is their legs, but a rule is you cannot use ur arms! You can only use your arms if you are the goalkeeper. A football field is 45 by 90 metres long. With all this knowledge we can also add that  Football is a sport played with football boots that have studs on the bottom so you can stick to the ground and get a better grip! There’s two objectives in football. Number 1: kick the ball in the net. Number 2: defend the ball from going into your net. Football is a pretty easy sport but it has become really difficult! When you do some skill moves like the “rainbow flick” the rainbow flick is where you put it between your legs, roll it up one leg and then hit the ball with the back of your heel while jumping. Once you complete these you will get the rainbow flick! Another skill is the elastico. The elastico is where you flick the ball 2 times with your feet, so like right and then to the left really fast. It’s a handy skill .You will feel stuck while practising, but when you do it, it’s so fun!

Football is played with a round ball which is pretty obvious. So with football it is really easy to play. There are a few complex rules like offside and 6 second rule. These rules are easy to catch up to but it’s really hard to follow during in-game situations. I’ll explain the 6 second rule now. So if the goalkeeper makes a save and catches the ball, he has six seconds with the ball in his hands. If the goalkeeper does this the other team is rewarded with an indirect free kick. Indirect meaning they cannot shoot and they will have to pass.

The other rule is ‘offside’.  offside is a way more complex rule. Offside is a rule that if you break the other team is awarded a free kick. Offside is called when you are behind the last player and you make a run and the ball is passed to you. If that happens to you, you won’t be punished but the other team will only get a free kick. You won’t be given a red or yellow card. On that topic yellow cards are rewarded for doing 2 fouls or you can get them automatically for doing a really hard foul. Same thing for red cards, if you get 2 yellow cards you will be ejected from the field and will get a penalty depending on how bad the foul is. If you injure someone really badly, you get a red card.

There are other things that can be offensive, like doing a handball and arguing with the referee or starting a fight. Most of these things are not tolerated in football meaning you will be ejected from the field if you do it. Sometimes if you stop you will not have a punishment. If you handball in the goal keeper box and save a goal even though you aren’t the goal keeper, you will get a penalty and a red or yellow card depending on the situation. When you decide to “Brexit tackle” and you slide tackle from the back. You’re out of the field! So I don’t recommend trying to Brexit tackle people.

Football is a really fun sport and I’m super happy that I chose football. Football is my favourite sport ever! But I still like other sports like cricket. I enjoy watching Cricket and playing other sports like badminton, tennis and lots of other sports. I enjoy playing and watching every sport but I especially love the UEFA Champions League where they battle for the title of “the best in Europe”. It’s one of the biggest tournaments in football alongside the World Cup. It may seem football is easy because all you have to do is kick it with your foot but no! You need good ball control and dribbling too. And iIf you want to be fancy, skills!
