Te wiki of te reo Māori is when all of our school (TGS) and all of New Zealand celebrates Te reo Māori one of the 3 spoken languages in NZ. In this week we have also been doing activities based on te reo Māori. There are also words of the week that are in te reo Māori, this week was Kai.
There is a special type of way to make food in Māori it is called hangi. It’s where all the family come together and have fun. In hangi you will need volcanic rocks that don’t explode in fire. In hangi you can put any kind of meat. All you will need is a lot of wood and a lot of volcanic rocks for the flame.
This Monday at our school assembly the whole school did the waiata te Manurewa o tamapahore. On Rāmere (Friday) the kapa haka kids had to perform the waita ‘nga iwi a’, ‘toi a Mai’, ‘te Manurewa’ and the last one was ‘haka powhiri’.
The story of the Manurewa, Te Manurewa o Tamapahore is named after the 2 Māori chiefs that were having a kite battle in this story. One brother got jealous and cut the others’ kite because his kite was higher. The kite kept on flying eventually it landed in coromandel.
During the wiki o te reo Māori Mrs Kelly, an intermediate teacher hides a patai in all of the spaces in the school. She hid a new patai everyday and in a new place but instead of having to send her a gmail in English you have to send it in te reo and the question is also in te reo.
This week is one of the best weeks in the year, it is such a good week and has so many learning opportunities. You learn so many more Māori words and Māori traditions. It’s a really fun and exciting week.
