Tōtara Park & Botanic Garden Reflection

What is kaitiakitanga?  How is this shown?
Kaitiakitanga encourages a community to grow and develop a connection with the land they live on making the environment around them better and more suitable for life. Kaitiakitanga can be shown by nurturing the environment and understanding the Māori knowledge system and worldview.

Information about stormwater, different filtration methods
Stormwater is when rainfall or melting snow drops down into a waterway instead of overflowing on roads, neighbourhoods  and schools lowering the rates of floods in New Zealand.

Species of plants that were seen
Some Species of plants that were seen at the Botanic were Garden Alyssums, chrysanthemum coronarium, farfugium japonicum and thymus.

What was different about Botanic Gardens vs Tōtara Park ?
The difference between the Botanic Gardens vs Tōtara Park are, that the Botanic Gardens were more centred around flowers instead, Tōtara Park was more of a hiking trail, the Botanic Gardens had a cafe for visitors, Tōtara Park didn’t.

Cool facts about the plants we’ve found
Lavender contains a calming oil that relaxes the muscles and can live for around 10-15 years with proper care.
The thymus plant is named after the Greek word thymos which means to “to fumigate”, the thymus plant is also edible in stews and soups.

How do they keep these areas clean?
They keep areas like Tōtara Park and the Botanic Garden clean by creating a filtration process to keep the areas from flooding and becoming mudslides and being covered with garbage and litter.
