Term 1-Information Report: The Stars
The Stars
Did you know that the average star is between 1 and 10 billion years old? You will most likely have looked up at the night sky at least once or twice, so you definitely need to know what you are looking at right? This book will cover the brightness of stars, what they are made of and constellations.
Brightness
Stars are balls of light scattered across the universe, and the reason why stars shine is because of nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion happens deep inside the stars core, it’s when hydrogen atoms smash together creating helium and releasing huge amounts of energy that warms up the gas. Fun fact, most stars you see in the night sky are bigger and brighter than the sun!
What stars are made of
Stars are mostly made of hydrogen and helium but the contain small amounts of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon, Stars are also composed of plasma and are formed by the gravitational collapse of large clouds containing cold gas. When the gas is compressed, it heats up and transforms into plasma. the temperature of the stars core depends on the mass of the stars
Constellations
A constellation is a group of stars that make up a shape in the night sky. They are mostly named after what they resemble such as Ursa Major (the great bear) or mythological figures like Orion and Hercules. There are also constellations that resemble Zodiac signs such as Pisces or Aries. In fact, all Zodiac signs have a meaning! Like the ones I mentioned , Pisces means “the fishes” and Aries means “the Ram/wolf!”
