“Ok this table goes here.” I told the teachers. We are just setting up for the TGs science fair. After our very last table we called one hapori at a time so their experiments wouldn’t get ruined. First hapori was kahu they made volcanoes from all around New Zealand, quilts and houses made out of popsicle sticks. Tuis made pottery and things on electricity. Piwakawaka made candles, insulated houses and preserved food. The kotukus made Water related items, volcanoes and clay. Pukeko made edible science (ice cream, butter and the vinegar egg). The kakapos made clay items about plants and seedlings and how they grow. Kiwis made the skittle experiment where all the colours come together in the middle.
It was finally Thursday and in the morning at 8:00 am the science fair was open and all the parents were inside looking at their child’s exhibit or at another child’s. Then the 8:20 bell rang and children were rushing down the hall to go to class. Some tried to look but the teachers sent them back. Once the 8:50 bell went and the parents left. So I went back to my office to work.
At 10 am the Piwakas came down to look at the science fair. They were only there for about 10 minutes until these two boys Almaan and Shabd overflowed the kiwis dish soap tubes with baking soda. I wish I wasn’t there when the tv broke because I and Mrs Starkly had to fix their mess. Those silly kids. The best thing the kids liked was the magnet fishing. It was where you had a fishing rod with a magnet at the end and some fishes that had a magnet in their mouth.
The next group was Kahus. I overheard them saying that the quilts that had the pepehas on, were so beautiful. There was a wall about body health and the good and bad food that you put in your body. I thought that was good. It was about exercise and health care. Another one from kahus was the survival kit it had: first aid kit/ med kit, walkie talkies, whistles, and torches. It showed how to make a fire and some shelter.
The next group to come was the Tuis/year 5s. They got told they were not allowed to touch anything but of course they did. Some kids can be late to the fair because they had other enrichment activities. Lucky that group of kids were very sensible and listened to their teachers unlike that other hapori the Piwakas. It was finally the end of the day. I had to stay at school to monitor the science fair.
It was the same thing as the morning but there were tasters for the preserved jars. So after we finished the fair we finally got to go home at our thirty pm.
