On Tuesday everyone went to Ambury park. The theme of this trip was called fibers. When we got there I was so excited, because this was my second time being there, but before we could do anything else we ate our morning tea and put our bags away.
Fibres
There was a man named Richard who taught us the different fibers and which animals they came from. When he was talking about the different animal fibers he told us what they were used for. it was very interesting, after he told us some safety rules when you are next to the farm animals, so when he grabbed a sheep skull, and showed us that the sheep didn’t have any top teeth so it was kind of safe to pat around the mouth, but I still not going to pat around the mouth because, image just feeling teeth at the bottom but gum on top.
The shearing shed
When we went to the shearing shed we saw two strong young men wrestling sheep trying to to shear them, then a little piece of wool came towards me and I grabbed it and put in my pocket to look at later, then we went outside janine was standing with some wool, she said “ you guys can feel it and smell it too”. We all smelled the wool and it had quite a pungent smell, then she told us that the wool hadn’t been washed, and it contained an oil called lanolin that helps your skin.
Felting wool
When we went to the felting station, Janine gave us all 3 different coloured wools, she told us to make a wool sandwich, which is where you put the three pieces of wool on top of each other, then when we were finished with that we all went to the sink and wet our wool sandwich. Then BOOM we all pressed down on the wool so all the fibers could connect and the water would drain out. When we went outside Janine told us to try and rip it apart, but it was way too hard to rip.
The nature walk
On the nature walk we took many photos and we saw many sheared sheep. My favorite thing on the nature walk was the big black pig that escaped its pen by a drinking hole for the animals. The scariest thing there was a freaky turkey that just looked at me weirdly. I loved it when I fed some lamb, and this sheep that looked like it had bunny ears so I called it a bunny sheep. There was also a wasp that we ran from. Then at the end we took a whāunu picture.
I learned a lot from this trip and I’d definitely go again.
My poem
We went to a park
There was a sheepdog that barked
There were Lot of sheep
And later I fell asleep
