This week in STEAM I researched Kaitiakitanga and conservation of the ocean. I researched about the Sea Pig. My research needed to include: Habitat Protection, Pollution Control, Sustainable Practices, Legal Frameworks that help with the protection of the species and things that we can do to help with the conservation of the ocean.
- Habitat Protection: Sea Pigs live in deep-sea areas with oxygen-rich zones. We can protect these areas by not hunting and over fishing, not polluting the area, take our rubbish home from the beach, and recycle our plastics properly.
- Pollution Control: most animal life in the sea, cephalopods need oxygen too, and these dead zones deprived of oxygen can damage cephalopod development and cause range shifts, which may harm the cephalopods over the long term. Nutrient pollution can also cause the ocean to become more acidic.
- Sustainable Practices: Squid with the MSC blue fish label is certified sustainable, limit the amount of fishing and ensuring all fish caught are the correct size and species.
- Legal Frameworks: A common law everyone has a right to take fish in the tidal waters of all rivers, estuaries, and the territorial limits of the sea unless they are interfering with the exclusive rights of others or are prohibited by statute.
