Kaitiakitanga means guardians of the Earth, and how we should protect it and the animals in it. It also is the relationship between plants/animals with people. We can show Kaitiakitanga(protect animals(be guardians) by researching what hurts them such as littering. Littering hurts animals because some animals mistake it as food like sea turtles mistake plastic for jellyfish, then when they eat, they can get sick and die. Here’s a video about Kaitiakitanga and an image about if we don’t protect it.
The Physical Characteristics of Insects
The similarities and differences between a cicada and wētā is that wētā is native only to NZ while the cicada is found all over the world(except the poles). The wētā is also bigger than a cicada and the cicada has wings, but in similarities, they’re both insects, which means they both have 6 legs.
Some other differences between the 2 insects because since the cicada has wings fly away from danger while the wētā, doesn’t have wings, it powerful hind legs to help it escapes from danger by hopping like a grasshopper. It also affects their speed. The cicada since it’s smaller can go faster than a wētā.
Some insects have these characteristics such as flies, Hercules beetle, Atlas beetle etc.
Like the wētā, the cicada has spiracles because since they’re both insects, and all insects have spiracles to breath through, the cicada does have spiracles.
Life cycle of The Preying Mantis
The praying mantis’ life cycle is made of 3 stages. The first stage is the coccoon. When a female praying mantis mates, the male fertilizes the eggs during copulation. After that, the female then lays the eggs with and in an hard egg capsule. The female mantis can lay 400 eggs in the coccoon. The next stage is the nymph stage. After 3 to 10 weeks, the eggs hatch into tiny mantis nymphs. When they hatch, they’re a brownish colour, and they know how to survive and get food. The mantis nymphs have to be careful of predators such as their siblings, birds, rodents and frogs. To become adults they have to moult a few times and they have to do it properly or else they can die if they fail to moult. The final stage is the adult stage. When the mantis nymph eventually becomes an adult, they’re able to hunt bigger animals: humming birds and insects that are smaller or the same-size as it. Then the cycle repeats.

Invasive Species – Common Wasp
There are lots and lots and LOTS of invasive insects! But one of the biggest nuisance are wasps, for they’re known to sometimes ruin outside activities, sting more times than bees and one of the worst one: common wasps kill NZ native insects. The common wasp’s scientific name is Vespula Vulgaris. What surprises me most is that they kill newly chicks, bees, and more. The reason why common wasps were able to get to NZ was because by nesting in WW2(world war 2) aircraft like planes, along with German wasps. You can find common wasps in NZ native forests like nothofagus forests in the South Island. Common wasps like to eat honeydew mostly but can be seen stealing honey from bees! Common wasps can do lots of harm to our native animals, so we need your help to bring them back to where they came from.
Insects in our world
Week 2 Tuesday, my class and I were in 6 groups. I was group 1. The people in my group were Nathan M, Gurman, Jacob, Olivia(absent) and me. We had an article about how insects are important, and Nathan was doing the 1st and 2nd part of the article, Gurman was doing the fifth, (idk(I don’t know) what Jacob’s part was) and I was doing the 4th part called “Insects are an important food source. I learned that not just animals eat insects but also people and other insects eat insects as well. They play a VERY important role of the food chain/web, because they’re one of the most common food for small mammals and reptiles. If they were gone, some of the animals that eat them would be gone as well. Insects don’t just play a role in the food chain, but they also are important for pollinating. Some insects are known to pollinate plants, such as bees, butterflies, flies, wasps, and more! The way butterflies and bees do this is they go to a plant to drink nectar and accidentally get pollen on them, then they go to another plant to drink nectar and transferring the pollen to the plant. Some insects are scavengers(animals that eat dead things). They’ll either eat things that are dead or alive. Like the dung beetle, it cleans dung/doo doo/poop made from cow, sheep, dog and more. Not just the dung beetle but also another type of scavenger insect is the meat ant. They strip off the meat of dead animals. But not all insects are good, some are known for carrying diseases such as mosquitos. But that’s why God created insects that control pest population like dragonflies. They usually prey on mosquitos when they’re nymphs and adults. Lastly, insects can actually be very inspiring for determination such as ants, termites, beetles etc. Some are also inspiring for what they do: pest population controlling, nature cleaners, and more! Even though most insects are disgusting and ugly, they are REALLY important to the world’s balance. Hopefully, they won’t go extinct.
Vili’s Personality
Hi! I’m Vili, and today I will tell you about myself. Things I like, for me I love playing dodgeball and octopus(not animal, it’s a game), and I also like telling jokes to my family. They definitely laugh at it all the time(I’m being sarcastic). Can I tell you a joke: “What do you call a scary boot, a boo-t”. Also my favourite animal is a praying mantis, I’m also a christian(a believer of Jesus). Things I DON’T LIKE, in dodgeball and octopus, I don’t like cheaters at all! I also don’t like people who litter or are racist, they’re annoying. AND!!! I DO NOT like people who try to hurt insects, or any animal. Lastly, I HATE PEOPLE WHO THINK JESUS STINKS, A NUISANCE OR IS FAKE (BELIEVE IN JESUS IF YOU WANT TO LIVE WHEN THE END TIMES COME)!!!!!!!!!! My favourite colours are black, blue, yellow, turquoise and grey. Things I do after school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, I usually do my spelling words and piano, but on Friday I just watch on my iPapa(iPad). My friends are Aaron H, Yi Xuan, Jacob, Caige, Laluna, Alex, Elijah, Dominic, Daniel, etc (I think). My favourite game is Minecraft, because it helps you become a bit more creative, play with friends and PvP with friends and mobs. I hoped you enjoyed knowing about me, bye.
